WHAT IS A METER PROTECTION DEVICE?
A meter protection device (MPD) is a safety device installed between the Ausgrid network supply and your property's meter and internal electrical system. Its primary function is to protect the electricity meter and the network from faults, overloads and short circuits at the point where power enters your property.
MPDs are required by Ausgrid on all new connections and upgrades and are increasingly being required on existing properties during switchboard upgrades, consumer mains upgrades and point of attachment works. They are also commonly required when connecting a solar system or battery storage system to the network, as the additional generation capacity changes the way power flows through your meter. Installing or upgrading an MPD is Level 2 electrical work and can only be carried out by a Level 2 ASP accredited electrician with direct Ausgrid network access.

Do I need a meter protection device?
Ausgrid requires an MPD on all new connections and on properties undergoing certain upgrades such as consumer mains upgrades, point of attachment works or solar and battery system connections. We will assess whether your property requires one as part of any Level 2 quote at no extra charge.
Do I need an MPD when installing solar panels?
In many cases yes. When connecting a solar system or battery storage to the Ausgrid network, an MPD is often required to protect the meter from the additional power flowing back into the grid. We assess this as part of every solar-related electrical quote and handle the full installation and network paperwork if one is needed.
Can any electrician install a meter protection device?
No. MPD installation is Level 2 electrical work and requires Ausgrid network accreditation. Jack is a fully accredited Level 2 ASP electrician meaning we can carry out this work directly without involving a third party contractor.
Is a meter protection device the same as a safety switch?
No. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electric shock by monitoring current flow inside your home. A meter protection device protects the electricity meter and the network at the point of supply. Both serve different and important purposes in your home's electrical system.
